Maurice Eli Mercie was born December 24, 1915 in Lyon County, MN, to August and Irma (Coens) Mercie. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Clotilde Catholic Church in Green Valley. Maurice attended Country School in rural Cottonwood / Green Valley area and St. Joseph School in Marshall. September 12, 1944, Maurice was united in marriage to Agnes Christopherson in Milroy. Maurice farmed in the Cottonwood / Green Valley and Marshall areas until 1964. After farming and moving to Marshall, Maurice worked for Larsonâs Home Furniture until his retirement in 1980. After retirement he worked for Southwest Ford delivering cars and Schwanâs Home Service delivering route trucks across the United States until 1997. Maurice enjoyed fishing for Northerns on Ten Mile Lake in Dalton, MN and for Walleye on Lake Miltona. He also enjoyed watching grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in high school basketball, softball, and rodeo. Maurice was a member of the Marshall Area Adult Community Center where he enjoyed playing cards and a good game of pool. He was a great story teller and prankster, especially after he and Agnes moved into Boulder Estates Retirement Home.
He is survived by his wife Agnes; two children Cheryl (Tom) Brauer of Alexandria and Darrell (Kitty) Mercie of Marshall; granddaughters Terri (Terry) Halvorson of Madison and Shannon (Troy) Bouman of Pipestone; five great-grandchildren Chelsey (friend Travis Naab) Halvorson of Minnetonka, Jordan and Wyatt of Madison, Bailey (friend Skyler Bloch) of Sioux Falls, SD, and Boyer Bouman of Pipestone; and sister Irene (Dick) Maertens of Marshall. Maurice was preceded in death by his parents, sister Madeline Kroger and brothers Joseph, Jerome, Gerard, and George.
