The funeral service for Milford Anderson, 93, of Westbrook, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 p.m. â 7:00 p.m. at Almlie Horvath Funeral Home in Westbrook. Visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. A private family interment will take place at the Pleasantview Cemetery in Dovray, MN.
Milford J. Anderson was born on April 29, 1923, to John E. and Julia (Nelson) Anderson at Westbrook, MN. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran Church in Westbrook where he was later confirmed. Milford graduated from Westbrook High School in 1941. Following graduation, he first worked for E.T. Hopkins at the Westbrook Theater and for Ernie and Hanna at Johnson Grocery before joining the Navy. He served three years, spending part of that time in the Southwest Pacific.
On January 21, 1945, he and Florence Spielman were married at Westbrook, MN, where they made their home and raised their two daughters. Florence died in 1987.
On May 29, 1988, he and Luella Rupp were married at Trinity Lutheran in Westbrook. They made their home in Westbrook.
Following World War II, Milford was employed by Klasse Sales and Service, before becoming actively involved in the bulk petroleum business. He worked for his father, John Anderson, and brother, Gerald, in the Amoco business, until 1974, when he and Francis Cohrs purchased the business. Together, they were partners of Ready Oil until 1984. Milford continued as bookkeeper until 1987, when he officially retired. In addition, Milford was a school bus driver for 10 years, and served as substitute mail carrier for 32 years.
Milford was a life-long, active member of Trinity Lutheran in Westbrook where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday School, and sang in the church choir and Trinity Menâs Chorus for many years.
As a community member, he served on the ambulance squad, belonged to Kiwanis, the Senior Citizenâs Club, and was Commander of the American Legion, receiving his 50 year membership certificate in 1997.
His leisure activities included gardening, singing, fishing and playing cards.
Milford died on Monday, May 30, 2016, at Hospice of Murray County in Slayton. He is survived by his wife, Luella, one daughter Jean Meyers, and husband, Douglas, of Hudson, WI, son-in-law John Anderson of Cannon Falls, step son John (and Connie) Rupp of Westbrook, step daughter Frances Falk of Westbrook, step-daughter-in-law Nancy Rupp of St. Cloud, sister Myrna Peterson of Phoenix, AZ, seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Florence, daughter Joan, step-son Edwin, brothers Fritz, Archie, Gerald and Milton and sisters Lilian Baarstad and Flora Tenley.
Memorials preferred to Hospice of Murray County.
