Oscar Melvin Olson

Oscar Olson age 88 of Westbrook, MN died on Monday, July 13, 2009 at the Sanford- Westbrook Hospital. Funeral service will be 10:30AM on Friday, July 17, 2009 at the Old Westbrook Lutheran Church, rural Westbrook. Visitation will be from 5:00 until 8:00 PM Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Almlie Funeral Home in Westbrook. Interment will be in the Old Westbrook Lutheran Cemetery. The Almlie Funeral Home of Westbrook is handling the arrangements. Online condolences may be placed at www.almliefh.com Oscar Melvin Olson was born March 7, 1921 to Kjetil and Ragnhild (Haugen) Olson on the family farm in Westbrook Township, Cottonwood County. He was baptized and confirmed in Old Westbrook Lutheran Church. He attended country school District #30, then graduated from Storden High School in 1939. He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, MN from 1940 through 1941. He farmed along with his brothers, Carl and Ole, in Westbrook Township for many years. On March 1, 1969 Oscar married Vernette Stavnes at Old Westbrook Lutheran Church. They made their home on Oscar’s family farm. He retired in 1986 and continued to live on the farm until his death. Oscar was a life-long member of Old Westbrook Lutheran Church and served on the church board. He was always willing to help his family, friends and neighbors. He played softball and baseball as a young man. He enjoyed bowling and pitched in horseshoe leagues, both in Storden and Arizona for many years. He took pride in restoring old John Deere tractors, once bought new by his brothers. For many years, Oscar and Vernette enjoyed wintering in Arizona. On Monday, July 13, 2009 Oscar died at the Sanford-Westbrook Medical Center at the age of 88. Oscar is survived by his wife, Vernette Olson of Westbrook, MN and her children, Diane (Dale) Hoganson of Apple Valley, MN and Sandra (George) McMullin of Minneapolis, MN; Juhl (Char) Stavnes of Lamberton, MN, Lowell (Karla) Stavnes of Thief River Falls, MN, Alvie Stavnes of Lamberton, MN, and Keith Stavnes of Apple Valley, MN; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Kay Olson of Westbrook, MN many nieces and nephews. His parents, brothers, Carl and Ole Olson, and sisters, Ragna Hendrickson, Alma Olson, Hilda Enstad, Olga Martens, Selma Knell and Esther Hert preceded him in death.
