Paul Dean Deutz was born on August 3, 1952, in Marshall, the youngest of 13 children born to Frank and Augusta (Sarazyn) Deutz. He grew up on the family’s home farm north of Marshall, helping out on the farm for his parents and brothers. He attended Holy Redeemer School and graduated from Marshall High school in 1970. After high school, he worked construction for several years, mostly concrete work, with the sole goal of saving enough money to start farming on his own. In 1974, he started dairy farming and was a farmer for the rest of his life. On November 29, 1980, he was united in marriage to Frances “Fran” Vercruysse at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tracy. The couple farmed Paul’s home farm the rest of their life, operating their dairy, raising hogs, growing crops, and most importantly raising a family and creating a home.
Anyone who knew Paul knew he was a very hardworking man, who never complained and always got the work done. He was also a man who if you asked for help, he would be there. Paul was also a very humble man, who never needed to show off and made do with what he had. Farming was his passion in life, and if you had a conversation with him, the topic would always work itself in. His passion for farming was how he taught his children, and latter grandchildren, many life lessons. Through these lessons, his legacy will continue forward.
When he wasn’t working, he spent his time with family and friends. He enjoyed time with his grandchildren, making breakfast for them, having ice cream with, or just bringing them a treat. His smile was always brightest when they were around.
Paul was also a man of Faith, who never missed Sunday Mass. He did not talk about his faith much, rather professed it through how he lived his life. Paul took great joy in the simple things of life. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Paul died suddenly and unexpectedly on the home farm in rural Marshall on Friday, April 22, 2022. He is survived by his wife, Fran, of Marshall, son Allen (and Kathleen) Deutz of Marshall, grandchildren Samuel, Autumn, Elsie and William, daughter Kelly (and Daniel) Pochardt of Lynd, grandchildren Jasper, Avery, Maverick and Paisley; siblings DeAnna Poor of Florida, Bill (and Becky) Deutz of Marshall, Laura (and Dick) Duthoy of Maryland, Dan (and Katie) Deutz of Lake Benton; in-laws Marlys Deutz, Alice Deutz, Armelia Deutz, Rosie Deutz, Curt Porter; Vercruysse in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
