Peter John Janssen was born on February 18, 1917, in Minneota, to Nicholas and Katherine (Wassenberg) Janssen. He grew up on the family farm near Minneota and attended country schools in Yellow Medicine County. Peter attended three years of school at a vocational tech studying transportation. Peter and Mary C. (DeSutter) were united in marriage on September 16, 1941. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served until February 14, 1946. Peter and Mary farmed in the Minneota and Marshall areas from 1946 until retirement in 1978. He enjoyed fishing, pin bowling, golfing, rolle bolle, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. He was a member of American Legion Post 564 of Ghent and served as Commander, as Adjutant and conducted the Memorial Day Service for many years. Peter was active at St. Eloi Catholic Church in Ghent. He seved as a charter member of the Church Council, was a Trustee from 1988 – 1999 and served as an usher for nine years. Peter died on Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Mary, of Minneota, children Priscilla (and Hollis) Osborn of Las Vegas, NV, Richard (and Annie) Janssen of Orlando, FL, Marilyn (and David) Gannott of Marshall, Daniel (and Joan) Janssen of Marshall, Gregory (and Jane) Janssen of Marshall, Steven (and June) Janssen of Fergus Falls, 14 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, sisters Sister Helen Janssen of St. Paul and Terry Gossen of Minneota. He was preceded in death by his son Gregory in 1953, parents, eight brothers and four sisters.
