Mass of Christian Burial for Richard Calvin, 90, of Marshall, will take place Friday, February 9, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Redeemer in Marshall.  Visitation will be held Friday, February 9, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. -1:00 p.m. at the church.  Interment will follow the service with military rites at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall.

 

Richard Lee Calvin, 90, of Marshall, passed away on January 20, 2024, at the Minnesota Veteran's Home in Luverne. 

Richard was born on Sept. 17, 1933, to Louis and Marion Calvin on the family farm in Marshall, MN. He was baptized, took first communion, and was confirmed at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Milroy, MN. He went to District 75 Country School through 8th grade, then stayed home to farm with his dad. He was drafted into the army in 1957, serving as a Private First Class Auto Maintenance Helper, and honorably discharged in 1963. 

Richard farmed soybeans and corn for many years, along with having a corn shelling business. After a farming accident, he switched to delivering flowers for Hy-Vee for 16 years and served as a flag man and crossing guard at Marshall Middle Schools. 

Richard met Carol Johnson on a blind date set up by his nephew, Mike. Richard and Carol married on Feb. 9, 1990, at Our Savior's Lutheran in Bird Island, Mn. He was an usher for 30 years at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall,  and a church member there for more than 60 years. Richard loved fishing, snowmobiling, and bowling, and meeting others for coffee and conversation at Hy-Vee after school patrol every morning. 

Richard is survived by his wife Carol of 34 years; children: Kelly (Lynn) Plumley, Scott (Carla Barringer) Johnson, Kathy (Nick) Ludowese; grandchildren: Shawn Plumley, Kathryn (Shaun Mullahey) Plumley, Kory (Jon) Eiler, Desiree (Val) Moro, Serena (Caleb) Barnhill, Crystal (fiancé Kyle Denhoff) Johnson, Mackenzie (Conor) Rooney, Stephanie (Mitch) van Dam, Devin (Jake) Rorabeck, Trent (Lexi) Squibb, Brody (Audri Fifield) Squibb, Maggie Ludowese; neighbor grandchildren: Preston, Rheed, Erinn and Masen Grosklags; great-grandchildren: Kooper, Kara, Kenady and Kollyns Eiler, Peyton and Landon Moro, Madi and Cole Barnhill, Tully Rooney, Jack and Quinn van Dam, Murphy, Bodie and Maxine Rorabeck, Rowyn, Marli and Ella Squibb, Ezra Fifield; sister: Barb Paulson, and many nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his parents Louis and Marion Calvin; sister Betty and Earl Linholm (brother-in-law), brother Jim Calvin and Jerry (sister-in-law), Norman Paulson (brother-in-law); nieces Kathy Welu, and Deb Nielsen; Craig Squibb (son-in-law); and Kristin Plumley (granddaughter). 

 

Memorials are preferred to the Minnesota Veteran’s Home.
