Richard Albert Schultz was born December 29, 1934, in Tracy, to Ernest and Cleo (Paa) Schultz. Richard grew up and attended school in Walnut Grove. He enlisted in the U.S. National Guard on January 22, 1953 in Tracy. He served a total of 8 years with the Tracy Unit achieving rank of SP4E4 and earned a Carbine Marksman Badge in June of 1956. During his service he was a Light Vehicle Driver and upon his Honorable Discharge on October 10, 1963 he was an Asst. Squad Leader. He shared stories occasionally of his KP duties and how he was a good cook. Richard helped on the family farm north of Walnut Grove and worked as a farm hand for family and several farmers, some of which became family friends throughout the years. He worked a variety of jobs in the agricultural field including at one of the elevators in Walnut Grove delivering feed, a few egg companies including Neil Peterson, Don Engelkes, and his last employment at Westbrook Egg Co. Richard was united in marriage to Roberta Vickerman on July 3, 1962, in Brookings, SD. With this marriage he also gained 3 stepsons who became family. He and Roberta also added to this family welcoming a daughter in June of 1963, a son in September of 1965 and another son in August of 1967. They lived and raised their family in Walnut Grove. Richard enjoyed gardening, yard work, cooking, baking cookies, canning fresh tomatoes from his garden, fishing, watching old movies on television, joking around, having a few beers and shaking dice. He was quite adept at the mechanical claw game and provided countless stuffed animal prizes to his grandchildren. He was a past member of the American Legion in Currie. After a stroke in August of 2004 Richard moved to Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Balaton where he resided for 13 years. Richard was called home to Heaven on May 27, 2017 with his daughter and nursing staff at his bedside. He is survived by his daughter Ruthie (and Brian) Marth of Walnut Grove, son Randy (Bandit) Schultz of Revere, MN, son Richard (and Becky) Schultz of Becker, MN, brother Robert (and Judy) Schultz of Walnut Grove, brother in law Gerald Posthumus of Rochester, MN, daughter in law Doretta (Cooki) Klein of Two Rivers, WI, Stepson Roger (and Rose) Klein of Walnut Grove, 15 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Roberta, sisters Dolores (and Albert) Beens, Arlene Anderson, Alice Posthumus, Brothers Dale (and Dorothy) Burnham, Dean (and Luverne) Burnham, Stepsons Robert Klein, and Ronald (and Peggy) Klein. Richard’s family would like to sincerely thank the Hospice staff from Compassionate Care of Worthington for their assistance in Richard’s care since February, the Colonial Manor of Balaton staff and nurses, many of you who were a constant in his life, became extended family to him during his residence, a bond that will be cherished always.
