Robert Nicholas Derynck was born on August 30, 1929, in Onslow, Iowa, to Omer and Naoma (Clark) Derynck. He grew up and farmed in rural Onslow until 1945 when he moved to Minnesota to work for his Aunt Palmyre and Uncle Fontz near Cottonwood. In 1948, he worked for Joe Boerboom on the farm north of Marshall. In 1951, Ike and his twin brother, Rolland “Mike”, were drafted into the U.S. Army. The brothers served during the Korean War. After his discharge, he returned to work in Minnesota. In 1953, he was united in marriage to Joan LaVoy at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Ike continued to farm with his brother North of Marshall until 1966. In 1966, he and his family moved to a farm near Tyler. They later built a home in Tyler and lived there until moving to Boulder Estates in Marshall in 2005. Ike enjoyed sports and was an avid Twins fan. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle , playing pool, and his grandchildren’s activities. He was a member of the U.S. American Legion and the Knights of Columbus, Third Degree. Ike died on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. He is survived by his wife Joan of Marshall, children Kevin (Christy) of Marshall, Kathy of Minnetonka, Karen (Howard) Carlson of Willmar, Colleen (Patrick) Bakker of Maple Grove, Curtis of Rockford, grandchildren Kollin and Kellen Derynck, Jessica and Matthew Carlson, Faith and Charity Derynck, Jordan and Renae Bakker, brother Julius Derynck of Lost Nation, IA, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Alida and twin brother “Mike”.
