Sharon Kay Gruhot

d. December 4, 2015

Sharon Larson made an entrance into this earthly world on March 21, 1941, the first-born of ten children to Sylvester and Marie (Henrich) Larson of rural Madison, Minnesota. She spent her youth on the family farm located half way between Canby and Madison, and was put to work tending to the hundreds of laying hens, as well as providing an extra set of hands in helping with the 9 siblings who would join the family in following years. She attended school in Madison, graduating from Madison High School in 1959. She took a job as a bookkeeper at the local feed mill following high school. A suave, debonair young man by the name of David Gruhot was sent by his employer to manage the cement plant in Madison, MN. Shortly thereafter, Dave spotted Sharon on her way to work, and the rest is history. Dave had to endure months of Polish jokes told at his expense upon each visit to the Larson farm by the nine siblings before the stamp of approval was put on Dave and Sharon’s courtship. They were married June 15, 1963 and made their home just outside of Marshall. To this union, three sons were born: Brian, Kevin, and Brad. Sharon opened her heart and home in 1969 to two nephews, Mark and Kent, who were orphaned following a car accident. Central to Sharon’s life were her grandchildren: David, Tegan, Saudia, Jonathan, and Alayna. Sharon loved being a grandma. Dave and Sharon started D & G Excavating in 1979, and Sharon took an active role in the day-to-day operations of the business, until her “retirement”, which occurred on February 12, 2007, when the company was sold. Sharon spent the next year taking care of Dave the best she could until he passed away in January 2008. Sharon was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, and underwent numerous surgeries, radiation treatment, and ongoing chemotherapy in an attempt to keep the cancer at bay. She lost the fight, but not the will to live, in the wee hours of Friday, December 4, 2015, surrounded by her loved ones. Sharon is survived by her sons, Brian (Kris) Gruhot of Lynd, Kevin of Marshall, and Brad (Karen) of Marshall. Nephews/sons: Mark of Minneapolis, and Kent (Cindy) of Post Falls, ID. Grandchildren David (Melissa Stassen), Tegan, Saudia, Jonathan, and Alayna. Sharon’s surviving siblings include Delbert (Carole) Larson of Fergus Falls, Elaine (Dale) Roth of Gillette, WY, Carol Beck of Maplewood, John Larson of Lakeville, Jeanne (Jeff) Grandpre of Sandstone, Richard Larson of Canby, Debbie (Paul) Sandberg of Hopkins, Kim Brown of Brainerd, and Renee (Guy) Wass of Mankato. Sharon has joined her husband and parents in eternity. Blessed be the memory of Sharon Gruhot. Memorials preferred to Holy Redeemer School.
