Mass of Christian Burial for Robert and Shirley McClain, 80 and 72, of Marshall, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Visitation for the couple will be Sunday from 4:00 p.m. â 8:00 p.m. with a CCW Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Parish Prayer Service at 7:45 p.m. at Rehkamp â Horvath Funeral Home in Marshall. Visitation will continue from 9:00 a.m. â 10:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will take place at a later date. Military Rites for Robert performed by the U.S. American Legion Post 113 of Marshall.
Robert Wendell McClain was born on September 3, 1934, in Marshall, to Jacob and Dorothy (Hostetler) McClain. He grew up in Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School. Robert enlisted and served in the U.S. Army. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Marshall where he drove truck for Murphyâs Freight. He later worked for Camden State Park and for the Minnesota Department of Transportation. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, time on the computer and coffee with his brothers and friends.
Shirley Ann Karolczak was born on March 13, 1942, in Minneota, MN, to Frank and Dorothy (Charboneau) Karolczak. She grew up in Marshall. After high school, Shirley obtained her LPN degree from Mitchell, South Dakota. She returned to Marshall where she worked as a nurse at the Weiner Memorial Hospital. For the last 20 years, Shirley has been working for the dining service of the Marshall Public Schools. She enjoyed playing cards and bingo, cooking and baking and following the Minnesota Vikings.
Robert and Shirley were united in marriage on February 17, 1962, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. To this union were born three children; Mark, Ann and Carol. The couple were always together and were most passionate about their family, especially their grandchildren.
They died on Wednesday, December 31, 2014, as the result of an automobile crash south of Lynd, MN. Survivors include son Mark (and Victoria) McClain of Cottonwood, daughter Ann Bergstrom of Milwaukee, WI, daughter Carol (and Justin) Ellis of Yankton, SD, grandchildren Mallorie, Jacob, Isaiah, Trevor, Jayci, Cayden and Kylee, step-granddaughter Cathryn, step great-grandchildren Jonovyn, Aidyn, and Bastiyn. The couple is also survived by siblings Mike (and Diane) McClain of Lynd, Jerry (and Bev) McClain of Garretson, SD, Rick McClain of Marshall, Judy (and Dennis) Eischens of Canby, Roger Karolczak of San Diego, David (and Sue) Karolczak of Brookings, SD, Karen (and Roger) Brogaard of Canby, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. They were preceded in death by their parents; Jacob and Dorothy McClain and Frank and Dorothy Karolczak.
