Steven Schmidt

d. October 12, 2010

Steve died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 following a 16 month battle with cancer. Steven John Schmidt was born to Lawrence and Ruth Hale Schmidt on April 14, 1951. He grew up on the family farm in rural Morgan. He attended St. Michael’s Catholic grade school and graduated from the Morgan High School in 1969 and from Alexandria Vo-Tech in 1971. He married Jeanne Radtke on June 8, 1974 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn, MN. They had one son, Kelly. In 1986 Steve began working for the United States Postal Service as a Rural Carrier Associate, delivering mail part time to the Westwood Acres’ area in Marshall and to the Lynd rural route patrons. In 1994 he became a full time city carrier delivering mail to the downtown Marshall Businesses and surrounding blocks. He greeted everyone he met with his proverbial “Howdy”. Steve loved his job and credited his patrons with making his job so enjoyable. Nothing was as important to him as giving good service to all of his customers. Of all the hardships Steve faced during his hard fought battle with Mesothelioma, not being able to see and serve daily the people on Route 4 was one of the toughest things for Steve to accept. Steve is survived by his wife Jeanne of Ghent and their son Kelly of St. Joseph, MO; his mother Ruth, his brother Louis, his sister Susan all of the Morgan, MN; his mother-in-law Alice Radtke of Sanborn, MN; brother-in-law John (Maureen) Radtke of Brookings, SD and his best friends; his sister and brother-in-law Linda and Doug Wohlenhaus of Wheaton, MN and their family, Jody, Jesse, Georgia, and Gracie of Wheaton, Matt, Shanna and Adelyn of Rochester, Aaron and Erica of Detroit Lakes and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Lawrence W. Schmidt, and his father-in-law Burnett Radtke.
