Virginia Johanna (Sterler) Skewes was born December 21, 1920, in Dale Township, Iowa, to Buss and Viola (Wilts) Sterler. Ginny grew up on a farm east of Marshall and graduated from Marshall High School. She attended business college for a time in Minneapolis. On January 17, 1941, she was united in marriage to Leonard Skewes in Marshall. She traveled with Leonard as he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war,in 1948, the couple founded Skewes Jewelry where they worked until their retirement. In the early 1970s, they began wintering in Naples, FL, and later Venice, FL. Ginny enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge. She also enjoyed traveling and playing golf.
After a brief illness, Ginny died Sunday, July 28, 2013, at her residence in Marshall, surrounded by family.
She is survived by her son Jim (and Pat) Skewes of Marshall, daughter Barb Skewes of Arlington, VA, grandchildren Sonja (and Brian) Thoreen, Monique Skewes, Brandon (and Lori) Skewes, Gretel Truong, Ben (and Melanie) Truong, great-grandchildren Lydia Thoreen, Zachary Thoreen, Ethan Skewes, and one great-granddaughter on the way, and a sister-in-law Faye Sterler of Marshall. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard and brothers; Virgil âShortâ and Ervis.
