Mass of Christian Burial for William “Bill” Sammons, 90, of Marshall, will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall, MN. Visitation will be Sunday, October 13, from 4:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. with a CCW Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Parish Prayer Service at 6:00 p.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Visitation will continue on Monday from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at the Remembrance Center. Interment with military honors will follow the service at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall. William “Bill” Donald Sammons was born on September 7, 1934, in Murray County to Clarence “Pete” and Helen (Keleher) Sammons. He grew up in Tracy, MN and graduated from Tracy High School. Bill enlisted and served in the U.S. Army. On September 27, 1958, he was united in marriage to Genevieve “Genny” DeMeyer at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. The couple made their home in Marshall and to this union were born children Doug, Steve, and Diane. Bill worked as a Parts Manager for Tholen Auto, O’Connell Motors, Southwest Ford and Napa Auto Parts until his retirement. After retirement, he enjoyed driving to pick up vehicles for local auto dealerships; Tholen Auto and Kruse Motors.
Bill was an avid Marshall Tiger and Minnesota Sports fan. He enjoyed following golf, the Twins, Vikings and especially his children and grandchildren’s activities. He and Genny were awarded the Tiger “Fans of the Year.” The couple also enjoyed traveling. In Bill's early years, he enjoyed bowling and golfing. He was an avid walker. He enjoyed gathering with friends and family and he became quite a good joke and storyteller.
Bill died on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at the Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his son Doug Sammons (Mary Herbert) of Groves, TX, grandchildren Melanie (Andrew) Kraemer, Crystal (Matt) Metivier, and Brittany (Justin) Lawrence; son Steve (Susie) Sammons of Marshall, grandchildren Joshua (Ashley) Sammons, Michelle (Jordan “JJ”) Jacobson, Jeremy Sammons and Rebecca (Jacob) Bottelberghe; daughter Diane (Wayne) Metcalfe of Prior Lake, grandchildren Morgan, Lukas and Madi Metcalfe; 13 great-grandchildren; siblings Dick (Wilma) Sammons of Berrien Springs, MI, Mary Ann (Gary) Mentjes of Lake Wales, FL, John (Pat) Sammons of Hastings, MN, nieces, nephews, step-siblings, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve, parents Clarence “Pete” and Helen, stepmother Delores, and brother Dave (and Helen) Sammons.
